An unexpected name has materialized for the Atlanta Braves in their quest to acquire a starting pitcher.

Atlanta is covering all corners of the market for a starter, with players ranging from Garrett Crochet and Luis Severino to Kyle Hendricks and Erick Fedde all reportedly in play.

Some feel that Atlanta should get on the phone with the Toronto Blue Jays about Toronto’s two-time All-Star starter.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the Braves should show interest in Toronto’s José Berríos as the deadline approaches.

When asked about whether Atlanta should pursue Toronto’s Kevin Gausman, Bowden suggested that Berríos would be a better get for the Braves.

“Because of his strong career track record, I would monitor Gausman’s starts between now and July 30 to see if he improves and it’s worth reconsidering a potential trade,” Bowden said. “However, I would have more interest in his teammates José Berríos, Chris Bassit or Yusei Kikuchi if the Blue Jays make any of them available.”

Berríos is 7-6 with a 3.38 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 104 innings pitched this season for the 39-46 Blue Jays (last in the American League East).

With the Blue Jays seven games back in the AL Wild Card race entering Wednesday, they are expected to be sellers this month, and the Braves could take advantage by presenting an enticing offer for Berríos.
