ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Midstate woman lost thousands of dollars in a sheriff’s department scam, and State Police say three out-of-state people were charged.

In the scam, Lewis Bodie, 65, of New York, Stephanie McFall, 34, of Georgia, and Robert Lewis Jr., 34, of Indiana, allegedly stole just over $16,000 from an Adams County woman, State Police at Gettysburg said in the charges filed.

The woman reported in January a deputy from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department called her saying she owed money for missing court as a witness, according to a criminal complaint. She was threatened by the caller to be arrested if she didn’t pay money.

Troopers said she was told that most payments were done through a “Coin Me” kiosk and she was told to go to one at a Giant grocery store located along Natural Springs Road in Straban Township.

Four transactions were made at the kiosk. The woman was told four different phone numbers to put in the kiosk and a four-digit code for each transaction, State Police said.

When she was finished, she was told she was not needed and that she was on a hush order. State Police said when she tried to call back, the actual sheriff’s department answered and told her to report the theft.

The one phone number the woman could remember was traced back to Bodie, and State Police said they saw his Coin Me accountant had $8,060 from two of the transactions at the kiosk.

According to the criminal complaint, State Police also saw some of the money was sent to McFall and Lewis, and from internet search records, and it was discovered those two were also near Bodie in Georgia.

The trio faces a felony charge of theft and a misdemeanor charge of impersonating a public servant.

A tip on how to avoid this kind of scams, sheriff’s offices will never call and demand payments over the phone.
