I wrote a couple of weeks ago pondering which would happen first – the country getting a new Prime Minister or SAFC getting a new manager. So say goodbye to the old failing administration; a new man has been appointed. A leader with a plan to correct the mistakes of his immediate predecessors. A clean slate on which to write a better future. I am filled with optimism and hope for the brighter times which lie ahead.

We’d been blessed with the convergence of both the Euros and the Copa America taking place this summer - and with the Olympics on the horizon - but with both competitions in the latter stages, we’ve gone past the frenzied pace of two-three matches a day and are now days in between competitive football.

The opening games for the 2024 Mens’ Olympic basketball tournament begin July 27, and of course, the heavy favorite is Team USA. Led by Olympic legends such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant and flanked by the games’ latest stars like Anthony Edwards and Bam Adebayo, the USA go into the Olympics looking to repeat as gold medal winners, but are looking for redemption after failing to medal in the FIBA World Cup. The old guard like James and Durant are coming in for one last ride after not playing in the Tokyo Olympics, but this is also the debut appearance for Stephen Curry and Joel Embiid. While the US is still believed to win the whole thing, the rest of the world is catching up, and Team USA needs a strong showing in Paris to solidify their place at the top of the basketball world.

Jefferson lost against Sergeant Bluff-Luton back in June, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Jefferson Yellowjackets lost 15-2 to the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers secured their fourth consecutive win over the West Virginia Black Bears with a 6-4 victory on Friday night in an MLB Draft League matchup. Scrappers’ 6-foot-11 right-hander Peyton Olejnik took the mound against Matthew Tippie, who made his league debut for the Black Bears. Olejnik dominated the top of the first inning, striking out the side. Tippie matched him in the bottom half with a scoreless frame.
