Some residents in Union and Madison counties will remain under a ‘Drinking Water Advisory’ until early next week.

According to the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association (SIRWA), the water distribution system north of Afton, Lorimor, Thayer and surrounding areas experienced issues on Thursday night (July4). As a result, customer accounts ending with numbers 055, 003, 063 or 064 are included in the notice.

Anyone accessing the water supply in these areas is recommended to boil the water before consuming it.

Here is more information on how to properly boil water, according to the CDC.

“We are hopeful to have the Drinking Water Advisory lifted by the beginning of the week,” said a notice on the SIRWA website.

Repairs have reportedly been completed and the water association is now in the process of collecting bacterial samples to ensure the water is safe to drink again. Customers should check the website for updates.

According to the Madison County Emergency Management’s Facebook page , the advisory is expected to expire by the end-of-day Tuesday. In the meantime, the organization has free cases of water for residents in need.
