Deer Springs Fire sparks in Kane County, grows to more than 9,100 acres in one day

UPDATE 7/7/2024 10:23 p.m. — As of 10:23 p.m. on Sunday, the Utah Wildfire Dashboard was updated to show that the Deer Springs Fire had grown to about 9,117 acres on the same day it was discovered.
UPDATE 7/7/2024 6:30 p.m. — In a Utah Interagency Fire press release , officials said the fire was human-caused, and a private cabin was being threatened by the Deer Springs Fire.
As of Sunday evening, seven engines had responded to the fire from five crews.
“The fire is burning on Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, south of Bryce Canyon approximately 21 miles northeast of Kanab, Utah,” officials said in the release.
Roads in the area — including Skutumpah Road and Timber Mountain Road — are closed for the safety of firefighters and the public, according to the press release.
UPDATE 7/7/2024 5:30 p.m. — Less than two hours after Utah Fire Info first alerted Utahns of the Deer Springs Fire in southern Utah, officials provided an update on the size of the wildfire that was discovered on Sunday.
At 3:55 p.m. on Sunday, Utah Fire Info said the Deer Springs Fire was estimated to be more than 500 acres.
At 5:35 p.m. on Sunday, Utah Fire Info said the blaze had increased to an estimated 1,500 acres to 2,000 acres in size.
“A Type 3 team has been ordered and is mobilizing,” Utah Fire Info said in the update .
ORIGINAL STORY: Deer Springs Fire sparks in Kane County, said to be ‘very active’
KANE COUNTY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A new fire was discovered to the northeast of Kanab in Kane County on Sunday, according to Utah Fire Info .
In a social media post on Sunday, officials said the fire — named the Deer Springs Fire — was estimated to be more than 500 acres and was “very active.” However, according to Utah Fire Info’s Utah Wildfire Dashboard , the blaze was estimated to be 1,200 acres as of Sunday afternoon.
Resources were responding both by air and by ground, but there were “no threats” as of Sunday afternoon, according to Utah Fire Info.

Bryce Canyon National Park also posted on social media Sunday, saying the smoke column was visible from the park. However, the park said air quality was not impacted by the fire on Sunday afternoon.
The fire is located on BLM land, according to officials. Bryce Canyon National Park said the fire was about 13 miles south of Yovimpa Point.
This fire is happening in an area where a Red Flag Warning is in effect. The cause of the fire was undetermined as of Sunday afternoon.
There is no further information at this time.
