A 21-year-old man was found in Mexico with his fiancee and his missing toddler over a month after the child was reported missing, police in Washington said.

The three were stopped near Santa Ana, Sonora, Mexico, over the July Fourth weekend, the Pullman Police Department said in a July 8 Facebook post.

Aaron Aung was initially suspected of taking his daughter camping to Montana because he was seen buying camping gear and a Montana map in Moscow, Idaho, police said.

He and his daughter were last seen May 29, police said.

Aung was supposed to return the child to her mother on June 3 in Pullman, Washington, but he never did, police said.

His fiancee, 21-year-old Nadia Cole, was also reported missing after she was last seen leaving the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on May 29, police said. She’s a former Pullman resident.

Authorities said they later learned Aung and Cole were likely traveling to Mexico with the child.

After being missing for over a month, all three were detained in Mexico and given to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The 2-year-old was placed with the Arizona Department of Child Safety and later returned to her mother, according to police and Facebook posts from family.

Cole was deported into the U.S., police said, and Aung is being held in the Santa Cruz County Detention Center in Nogales, Arizona, police said.

He will be extradited to Whitman County, Washington, on an outstanding warrant for first-degree custodial interference, police said.

Nadia Cole’s parents, Kirk and Beata Cole, released a statement about her return to the U.S.

“Since her return, Nadia has been fully cooperating with authorities to help locate and aid in the safe return of Aaron Aung and 2-year-old Seraya Aung Harmon. She is recovering from her ordeal at a secure private location,” according to the statement.

“Details of the circumstances that led to her disappearance remain part of an ongoing investigation, and we trust that more information will be released as deemed appropriate by the investigating agencies,” the statement said.
