LOUSIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Louisa County Water Authority has implemented mandatory water restrictions in efforts to prevent shortages of safe portable drinking water for county residents connected to public water systems.

“Water is a precious commodity and should always be treated as such, but especially during drought conditions,” said Judson Foster, LCWA Chairman. “Please do your part to ensure water resources are available for years to come.”

The authority’s announcement Wednesday comes as reservoir and well levels continue to drop amidst months of dry conditions with very little rainfall.

The conditions have caused for the Northeast Creek Reservoir and the Green Springs Well levels to drop below normal levels for this time of year, according to the authority.

The authority said any violation of the mandatory restrictions during the emergency declaration will be enforced as a Class 3 Misdemeanor.

A total of nine water restrictions were put out:

    • No watering of outside shrubbery, trees, lawns, grass plants, home vegetable gardens or any other vegetation.
    • No washing of cars, trucks, trailers or any other type of mobile equipment except at a licenses commercial car wash facility.
    • No washing of sidewalks, streets, driveways, parking lots, service station aprons, exteriors of homes or apartments, commercial or industrial buildings or any other outdoor surface except where mandated by federal, state, or local law.
    • No operating of an ornamental fountain or other structure making a similar use of water.
    • No filling of swimming or wading pools requiring more than five gallons of water, or the refilling of swimming or wading pools which were drained after the effective date of the declaration of emergency.
    • No fire hydrant use of any purpose other than the suppression of fires.
    • No serving of water in restaurants, unless requested.
    • No operation of water-cooled comfort air conditioning that does not have water-conservation equipment in operation.
    • Any additional water use restrictions as deemed necessary.

There are a few exceptions to the restrictions which can be found here .
