The NFL is one of the most surprising leagues in sports. With so few games every season, it feels like anything can happen at any time. With less than 20 looks at players every year, it can be easy to see one thing when another is happening. As such, some players fall below the radar and others become the radar.

Here are three quarterbacks who will be better than people think in 2024.

    Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

Take a quarterback who threw for 45 touchdowns and three interceptions, pair him with one of the best offensive minds in the game in Sean Payton, and the result is failure? That’s what many NFL fans are expecting for Bo Nix this season.

However, the new Broncos quarterback is one of the most experienced rookies in the league going into his debut campaign.

Taking that into consideration, Nix could hit the ground running.

After making Russell Wilson look somewhat like his old self last season, Payton’s rust is gone. Meaning, the Broncos could shock the NFL zeitgeist and build on a growing win total over the last two seasons.

In 2022, the team went 5-12. In 2023, they went 8-9. As such, it might not take much improvement to get over .500 this year from a big-picture standpoint.

Nix would get plenty of credit if that was the case, beating expectations.

    Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns

Deshaun Watson has been all but written off by the majority of fans. After his first two years with the Browns, many are ready to mentally move on. However, while Watson didn’t light up the stat sheet last year, he did look nearly pristine in one area. In his six games before suffering what turned into a season-ending injury, he went 5-1.

If Watson can stay healthy and keep the same pace he did last year, the Browns will be in line for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. That would dismantle expectations placed on Watson and would allow the team to revisit whether giving him the first fully guaranteed contract in NFL history was worth it (right now, the general consensus is that it wasn’t).

It would also likely come with Cleveland’s first division title in more than 30 years.

    Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers

At this point, many fans have started the countdown clock on Bryce Young. After the Panthers won just two games last year, expectations could not be lower.

However, the story of Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff should give Carolina fans some hope.

Goff started his career with an 0-7 run under Jeff Fisher while with the St. Louis Rams (now Los Angeles). The next year, under Sean McVay, Goff logged an 11-5 record, changing his story overnight.

Young has the chance to do the same. With expectations so low, it might not even take a .500 record to trump expectations. Going from two wins to eight wins could change the story of Young’s career. Most jumps happen in a quarterback’s second season, so if there is hope for Young’s future, it is in 2024.
