SOUTH KITSAP — Repairs for Sunnyslope Road between SW Lake Flora Road and Cynthia Lane will start in August, according to Kitsap County.

The road has been closed since last December, when heavy rains caused part of the road to collapse. The rains caused a failure of a 36-inch diameter, corrugated metal culvert where Coulter Creek ran beneath the road. The creek was flowing outside the culvert and washing out the roadbed, which led to the months-long road closure.

Subsequent inspections revealed that a second culvert on the same section of the road is also failing and will need replacement, the county said in a statement on July 12.

The county's crews are scheduled to begin construction to replace the structures in August upon receipt of pipe replacement materials. The goal is to finish the necessary work and restore access to the road by October, according to the statement.

"This timeframe falls within the 'fish window,' designated by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to minimize disturbance to aquatic life," the county said.
