Even with a full offensive coaching staff, the Jets tried to lure an intriguing candidate to Florham Park this offseason.

The Jets spoke with former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith about working with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in January before he joined the Steelers as their offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports .

It’s unclear what the exact job would’ve been, though given the relationship between Hackett and Aaron Rodgers dating to their Packers days, it was unlikely to involve calling plays.

Smith, who was fired after three seasons as head coach in Atlanta, wasn’t interested in the Jets role, partly because of its ambiguity, according to ProFootballTalk .

Smith had success in two seasons as the Titans’ offensive coordinator.

In 2019 and 2020, Tennessee’s offense — including Derrick Henry, A.J. Brown and Ryan Tannehill — had the fourth-best mark in expected points added (EPA) per play.

The results followed, with the Titans reaching the postseason each year.

Smith was subsequently named Falcons head coach, but his tenure in the top job was disappointing.

The Falcons went 7-10 each of his three seasons as head coach, struggling at quarterback by mixing and matching an aging Matt Ryan, Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke.

The Jets still hope to rekindle the magic between Rodgers and Hackett from Green Bay, but that dream was deferred when the 40-year-old quarterback tore his Achilles on the fourth play of the 2023 season.

Zach Wilson, Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle took turns filling in for Rodgers, and the Jets ended the year 29th in points per game and last in both EPA per play and success rate.

With Rodgers back under center, plus upgrades to the team’s receiver corps and offensive line, the Jets hope their offense will finally flourish in 2024. They have not finished in the top 12 in points per game since 2015.

Hackett, Rodgers and the Jets will begin training camp on Tuesday.
