The specialist search team employed by Jay Slater ’s devastated family have been seen scouring the ravine where he tragically lost his life .

Experts from the Dutch Signi Zoekhonden, who are often deployed in the aftermath of natural disasters, were flown to Tenerife by Jay ’s family on Monday. But they arrived just as his body was finally found by Spanish search teams. However they returned to the treacherous location, known as the Juan Lopez ravine, in the remote Macizo de Teno mountains in the north-west of the island.

A source revealed they returned on behalf of the family so they could fully understand the geography of where Jay was found. They were seen today with their Belgian Malinois sniffer dog called Flex returning from a five hour trek deep into the gorge. The team from the Signi Zoekhonden charity said they are determined to make sure nothing is left in the valley that could help explain Jay’s death.

They have also made a short film for Jay’s mother so that the family has a record of the location. The post-mortem examination confirmed that the multiple injuries Jay suffered were consistent with a fall from height but there are still other unanswered questions. The team is led by veterinarian Esther van Neerbos who dedicates all her spare moment time searching for people who have gone missing and helping their families find closure.

She revealed the dog flex indicated at a particular spot in the ravine which she described as very “difficult and dangerous” and which goes from 20m to 100m wide in places and has steep cliffs either side. She also revealed that tragically Jay would never have been able to make it to the sea, as has been theorised he was attempting to do, because he would have eventually run into giant rocky cliffs which are almost impossible to pass.

She is in close contact with Jay’s family and said it is “very sad, they are crying, crying, crying.” She revealed the family want to visit the location to lay flowers but she is advising them that it is just too dangerous. She added: “Every case is sad, it’s particularly difficult for mothers, it is never nice to have to search for a young child.

“Losing your boy is the worst thing you can think about. I think the rescue workers that found him did a very good job. Jay was a very young guy, he did very well to get as far as he got. The place where he was found is a very dry, small valley, very difficult to get into.” The crack team were employed by Jay’s friend Lucy Mae Law, who raised over £50,000 through a GoFundMe page.
