Monroe County workers scrambled this morning, working to bring about 3,500 devices back online that were impacted by the worldwide cybersecurity CrowdStrike disruption while also trying to ensure public safety operations aren't affected.

The county's emergency 911 functions were impacted but are operational, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said at a morning news conference. Anyone calling should wait if put on hold, and the calls will be answered, he said.

The most significant impact was for operations, such as the County Clerk's Office or Department of Motor Vehicles offices, that deal with the public in face-to-face operations, according to Bello. He said he hopes the county operations will be up and going by Monday.

According to Bello, about 3,500 county devices were affected. By 10 a.m., county informational technology workers were able to get about 500 of those back online. The county used both an automated and manual response.

"We'll have to put hands on keyboards to resolve it," said Daniel Krebs, a cybersecurity expert with the county.

Andy Moore, the director of the Greater Rochester International Airport, said about 33 percent of the flights were delayed or canceled by 10 a.m. Customers should work with their airlines, just as with other delays, to resolve flight impediments, he said.

Bello said he received a call around 3:30 a.m. about the CrowdStrike disruption. CrowdStrike, a global cybersecurity operation, said the disruption was triggered by new software it was loading.

The county then pushed to see what all was impacted. Public safety operations were able to continue unimpacted, partly because of back-up systems.

CrowdStrike's reputation has been stellar, and its wide usage is at the core of the similarly wide scale of the tech interruption. "CrowdStrike is a top-tier product," Krebs said.

Bello said there was nothing to suggest any data contained in county files "was compromised."
