WNBA Commissioner Reveals Major Update On Upcoming Schedule

2024 is a unique season for the WNBA. With the Paris Olympics coming up, the WNBA will take a month-long hiatus as Team USA looks to defend its gold medal.

In 2025, with no World Cup or Olympics, there will not be a break in the middle of the season. But, in light of the WNBA's newfound success that rookies such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have brought in, there could be some major changes coming to the 2025 schedule and beyond.

Before the 2024 WNBA All-Star game, commissioner Cathy Engelbert revealed the possibility of a WNBA schedule expansion and playing overseas.

"As far as the number of games, we play under our current collective bargaining agreement, and we can play up to 44 games... We're certainly looking at playing the max games, up to 44. Also, looking at playoffs and what we can do with our playoffs," Engebert said.

The WNBA started with 28 games per team in their inaugural season. For most of the league's existence, teams have played 34 games each season. In 2023, the WNBA played a 40-game schedule for the first time.

Engelbert continued, "I hugely admire what the NBA has done with their global league games platform and we started ours after the pandemic with Toronto and then last year in Edmonton. We'd love to expand that further, whether that's to Europe or Asia longer term. Some people mentioned Mexico City, Middle East, Africa. So we're looking at all of that."

In the 2023- 2024 season, the NBA held two global regular season games, one in Paris and one in Mexico. They also held two preseason games in Abu Dhabi.

With the attention the WNBA has started to receive in 2024, these schedule changes are a huge possibility.
