INDIANAPOLIS — Many Indiana lawmakers, politicians and political groups are weighing in after President Joe Biden announced Sunday he would be dropping out of the 2024 election.

Biden, who made the announcement in an open letter to the American people, cited growing pressure from other Democrats as reason for his withdrawal.

Here is what Indiana lawmakers and political groups had to say:

    INDems

“We want to thank President Biden for his long service to our country and the exceptional job he has done as president. President Biden led our country out of the worst pandemic in 100 years, reignited American manufacturing and infrastructure growth, brought unemployment to a 40-year low, and oversaw record job growth in Indiana and across the country.

In Indiana alone, Hoosiers saw an administration committed to advancing union labor, creating more opportunities for working families, and combating climate change. President Biden broke through the partisanship in Washington to pass the Infrastructure and Jobs Act, the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act. We are committed to continuing the progress and building on the infrastructure decade President Biden has started.

More than anyone, President Biden understands the importance of this election and this moment. That’s why after deliberation and thought, he has decided to leave the presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to defeat Donald Trump and stop Project 2025. Americans are hungry for a new generation of leadership from the White House to local offices to move America forward with liberty and justice for all.

Now is the time to unite behind Vice President Kamala Harris to defeat Donald Trump and continue the progress of the last three-plus years. Vice President Harris has already shown leadership on the issues that impact everyday Americans, from gun violence prevention to protecting abortion rights and fighting for reproductive justice in all 50 states.”

    Congressman Rudy Yakym

”If Joe Biden is too frail to run for re-election, then he is unfit to serve as Commander-in-Chief for one more minute, and must resign immediately.

Americans won’t forgive Biden or Harris for this disgraceful betrayal of their trust.”

    Congressman Andre Carson

”I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished under President Biden, like setting our economy on the right path after COVID-19. Democrats stand for reason and justice, and we stand on the right side of history.

    Onward.”

    Congressman Jim Banks

“If Joe Biden if is unfit for campaigning, he’s unfit for office.

If Joe doesn’t resign, the 25th amendment must be invoked!”

    Congressman Larry Buschon

“President Biden has made the correct decision to end his bid for a second term. It has been clear for a long time that he does not have the mental or physical capacity to serve another term. I want to thank the President for his decades of public service.”

Current Indiana U.S. Senator and Republican gubernatorial nominee Mike Braun

“If President Biden is incapable of serving as his party’s nominee, he’s incapable of serving as our Commander-in-Chief for the next 6 months. He should resign effective immediately as a matter of national security.”

    Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick

“Respecting and appreciating the legacy of President Biden’s service, I support his decision to not seek re-election to another term. As governor, I will be committed to working with the president – whoever is elected in November. Indiana deserves the best leadership to protect our rights and freedoms and I will be a relentless champion for all Hoosiers.

President Biden has been a steadfast patriot and leader for our country. His decision to withdraw from the presidential race is yet another act of service in a long and distinguished career dedicated to the betterment of the United States. President Biden’s tenure in public service has been marked by kindness. We should honor President Biden’s legacy, patriotic devotion, and service to our country as we move forward. It is time for the Democratic Party to build on the myriad accomplishments of the Biden administration and strive to uphold the values of integrity, justice, and unity that he has exemplified.”

Democratic attorney general nominee Destiny Wells

“I am forever grateful for the direction President Biden has led our country—let’s continue due north and get to work. Anything is possible and I am anxious to seize the opportunities ahead. I join all Americans in rallying to continue President Biden’s work by supporting Vice-President Kamala Harris.”

Former South Bend Mayor and current Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg

“Joe Biden has earned his place among the best and most consequential presidents in American history. I am so proud to serve under his leadership, and thankful for his unwavering focus on what is best for our country.”
