Team USA remains the favorite to win a fifth consecutive gold medal in Paris, but the Americans are coming off quite a scare on Saturday vs. South Sudan . Would a comfortable win over Germany in one final exhibition game on Monday alleviate concerns about the squad?
South Sudan came extraordinarily close to pulling off the upset against Team USA on Saturday, jumping out to a sizable early lead and falling just a point short in a 101-100 loss. LeBron James played hero for the U.S., scoring 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting, but his team might not be so lucky against an even tougher opponent when the Summer Games get underway.
Germany currently boasts the sixth-shortest odds to win gold in Paris, and that kind of finish would certainly come as a surprise. Still, it's a team on the rise. Magic forward Franz Wagner has become a young leader for Germany, while NBA veteran Dennis Schroder has long been a focal point for the team.
Germany won the 2023 FIBA World Cup, prevailing over Team USA in a high-scoring semifinal. The Americans have every reason to believe they have a stronger group entering the Olympics, but their struggles against South Sudan might open a window for Germany to build massive momentum entering their Olympic run.
