A video is going viral showing 25-year-old Alexis Smith, a full-time cardiothoracic ICU nurse, standing on stage at the 2024 Miss Kansas Competition on June 8, where she bravely called out her abuser who showed up in the audience ahead of her being chosen to represent the Sunflower State at next year’s Miss America pageant.

When asked by the pageant host, “What will be your vision as the next brand ambassador for the Miss Kansas Organization?” Gracefully replying, Smith promised to “eliminate unhealthy and abusive relationships.” She continued to explain, “Matter of fact, some of you out in this audience saw me very emotional because my abuser is here today. But that’s not going to stop me from being on this Miss Kansas stage and from representing as the next Miss Kansas, because I, and my community, deserve healthy relationships and we deserve a domestic [violence] -free life. Thank you.”

After being crowned, Alexis Smith took to her social media account on Facebook and shared a clip of her promise, adding , “Respect Reclaimed is about reclaiming your power and standing firmly in it. On the night of Miss Kansas, my journey took an unexpected turn when someone I have been healing from tried to disrupt my peace. Instead of falling into silence, I chose to live out my vision for a better world. I took back my power—not just for myself, but for my dreams and everyone watching and listening.”

She continued, “This isn’t about shunning others; it’s about turning our pain into purpose and channeling it in a way that unifies and uplifts. I’m ready to use my story, tools, and resources to end unhealthy relationships in all forms. My voice and advocacy will empower everyone to reclaim their own power in their own unique way. I might be small in stature, but I stand tall in strength, purpose, and power with hopes of inspiring others to do the same.”

While speaking with local news outlet KSNW ‘s Eddie Randle , the recently crowned Miss Kansas explained why she courageously called out her abuser in the audience of the beauty pageant. She said, “My family, every single woman in my family, was impacted by domestic violence. At the age of 14, I got into my first relationship, but it was also an abusive relationship that I was in until about 2018, 2019. It’s something that I’m still experiencing and dealing with today.”

Miss Kansas continued to share that having this new title means she can now make a serious and powerful impact on the problem. She said, “I took advantage of the Miss Kansas Organization, which truly focuses on empowering women. And me, being a woman who needed that empowerment all my life, being a bystander to domestic violence, a victim, a survivor, and now an advocate as well as a young woman who is educationally driven, I have the opportunity not only to share my story on such a large scale but also go back to school.”

She also said that there are four points of the Miss Kansas crown: style success, scholarship, and service, adding, “A big part of that is service and going out and taking your community, and not only developing a better you but a better community as well, and talk about your social impact and your initiative. It’s something that I’m incredibly excited about to do on a large scale.”
