BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. — A driver was found dead at the scene of an accident in Bartholomew County Monday afternoon after a truck exited the roadway and became partially submerged in a lake.

Deputies with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:43 p.m. to a lake located in the 8000 block of W. Old Nashville Road after receiving reports that a truck had been submerged in the water.

According to BCSO, a witness saw the truck collide with a mailbox on the north side of the road before the vehicle turned south while traveling across the yard of a home in the area. The truck proceeded to crash into an elevated deck and fence before traveling downhill, BCSO said. Eventually, a portion of the truck came to rest in the water next to a lake-side dock.

Local residents arrived to offer assistance to the driver, who was soon pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. BCSO said preliminary information indicates the driver may have experienced a serious medical emergency that led to the accident.

    The accident remains under investigation.
