FIREBAUGH, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A farm worker in Fresno County reported what they thought was a man with a gun Tuesday morning, but deputies say it was actually a transient holding a black sock.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, at around 9:15 a.m. a farm worker reported that a man in an orchard outside Firebaugh had fired a gun at him and others and then ran away. When deputies arrived at the orchard’s location, officials say they searched the area and eventually found the supposed suspect and detained him.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the man was a transient passing through the area and the farm worker was trying to chase him off the land. Officials say the transient was holding a black sock in his hand which the farm worker thought was a gun.

Officials say the transient was transported to a hospital for evaluation due to some exhibited mental health issues. No other information about the incident was made available.
