    18 North Carolina stores fined for ‘excessive’ price scanner errors. Which overcharged customers?

    Earlier this year, over a dozen stores across North Carolina were fined for overcharging customers, including some Target, Family Dollar, and Dollar General locations.

    “Our Standards Division remained diligent in its effort to protect consumers across our state in 2023,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Inspectors continued to find significant numbers of price scanner errors at stores across the state, which serves as a reminder that consumers should check their receipts and notify store managers if they see an error.”

    The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division found significant price-scanner errors at 18 stores in 12 counties.

    Here are some key findings:

    • Burke County:
      • Food Matters Market, Morganton: $555 in penalties.
    • Cabarrus County:
      • Circle K, Concord: $845 in penalties.
    • Forsyth County:
      • Family Dollar, Winston-Salem (MLK Blvd.): $5,000 in penalties, $5,000 outstanding.
      • Family Dollar, Winston-Salem (Waughtown St.): $12,795 in penalties, $4,550 outstanding.
      • Family Dollar, Winston-Salem (South Broad St.): $3,110 in penalties.
    • Franklin County:
      • Dollar General, Franklinton: $4,320 in penalties.
    • Guilford County:
      • Dollar General, Gibsonville: $1,635 in penalties.
    • Hertford County:
      • Family Dollar, Ahoskie: $15,000 in penalties, $5,000 outstanding.
      • Family Dollar, Hertford: $5,585 in penalties, $3,190 outstanding.
      • Family Dollar, Murfreesboro: $5,000 in penalties.
    • Lee County:
      • Dollar General, Sanford: $3,330 in penalties.
    • Mecklenburg County:
      • Family Dollar, Matthews: $7,995 in penalties, $10,485 outstanding.
      • Family Dollar, Charlotte (Rozzles Ferry Rd.): $3,045 in penalties, $3,695 outstanding.
      • Target, Charlotte (University City Blvd.): $14,755 in penalties.
    • Montgomery County:
      • Advance Auto Parts, Troy: $405 in penalties.
    • Perquimans County:
      • Family Dollar, Hertford: $15,000 in penalties.
    • Stanly County:
      • Family Dollar, Norwood: $14,790 in penalties, $5,000 outstanding.
    • Union County:
      • Family Dollar, Indian Trail: $4,680 in penalties, $6,905 outstanding.

    Consumers are advised to check receipts and report errors to store managers or contact the Standards Division at 984-236-4750. Penalties and reinspection continue until stores meet the required error rate.
