BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The trial of Sebastian Parra and Robert Roberts — accused of killing a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation counselor — continued Wednesday morning with the prosecution continuing to play a video recording of Parra’s testimony at Roberts’ 2022 preliminary hearing.

Initially, only Roberts was charged in the Aug. 24, 2022, shooting death of Benny Alcala Jr., 43, killed while charging an electric vehicle near the Target on Stockdale Highway. A grand jury later indicted Parra after he admitted having a gun in his backpack the day of the shooting.

He lied during the preliminary hearing, claiming he hadn’t been in possession of the gun for months.

Prosecutors say Parra gave Roberts the gun, and Roberts shot Alcala when the counselor ran after they tried to rob him.

Both Parra and Roberts are charged with first-degree murder and face life terms in prison if convicted. Their attorneys have each said the other defendant is responsible for Alcala’s murder.
