49ers QB Brock Purdy Earns Intriguing Take From NFL Analyst

Brock Purdy fever is continuing to sweep the nation despite Purdy’s San Francisco 49ers losing the Super Bowl to Patrick Mahomes. Jimmy Garoppolo pulled off the same feat at the end of the 2019 season, but the tone is different for Purdy.

Analysts and fans have mostly showered praise on the quarterback. However, one analyst planted the seed for perhaps the next Tom Brady vs Bill Belichick debate.

Writing in a recent article for Bleacher Report , analyst Kristopher Knox wondered whether it was the 49ers creating Purdy’s success or the quarterback himself.

“Yet the third-year signal-caller has benefited from arguably the league’s best offensive supporting cast. Would he be even close to as successful with a different franchise? It’ll likely be some time before Purdy is asked to answer that question. The 49ers can certainly win with Purdy, but they’ll probably want to see at least one more year of high-level production before deciding to build around him,” he wrote.

Of course, the argument of whether the quarterback or his support system is the true seed of his success is as old as the game itself. Many wondered if it was Brady or Belichick, Roethlisberger or Tomlin, Mahomes or Reid, and many more over the last few decades. Fans rarely get a clear answer.

Brock Purdy’s success lies on much more than one key factor

However, many look at the equation incorrectly. Most assume that either the surrounding circumstances did all of the work for the quarterback or his environment did all the work. Few argue that it is both and even fewer break it down deeper than that.

Sometimes, the quarterback deserves most of the credit for success. Other times, the quarterback deserves little. Usually, successful teams land closer to a 50/50 split. Some could argue that it could be a 75/25 split or even a 60/40 split.

Rarely is it the case where one side deserves all of the credit for team success. With this in mind, some of the success is likely due to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Some of the success is likely due to the team’s roster. Additionally, some success is due to the quarterback. Many more factors play into how one prospers in the NFL. The weather fit could even be a factor. Simple luck could also play a role.

Put simply, boiling one’s success down to one or two variables is usually overly reductive in any analysis, including when looking at the NFL.

As such, for the 49ers to succeed this year, they’ll need a little bit of it all. In other words, everyone, including the football gods, needs to buy in.
