RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — In a letter dated July 24 to Yolanda Hill, the wife of Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said her non-profit, Balanced Nutrition, Inc., has “serious deficiencies” in operating the Federal Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Balanced Nutrition helps childcare providers navigate the program which provides federal subsidies to help provide meals to children.

State finds ‘serious deficiencies’ at non-profit run by Lt. Gov. Robinson’s wife

NCDHHS lists a number of deficiency claims against the non-profit, including record keeping, income eligibility, enrollment documentation, training, fiscal integrity, and verification of valid claims.

The letter reads, “the state agency has made multiple attempts to schedule an in-person exit conference, by email, telephone, and written communication, with no response.”

Also included are documents referring to specific facilities and what the agency says it is owed. The totals are reached after verifying what meals were reported and those that can or cannot be verified.

NCDHHS told CBS 17 that $24,400.29 is owed back to the state agency and the funds must then be returned to the US Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition service. The funds have not been returned, according to the state agency.

Based on the July 24 letter, NCDHHS is giving Hill until Aug. 7 to provide documentation that shows action has been taken to fully and permanently correct every listed deficiency. If that deadline is missed, the letter states that NCDHHS will propose the disqualification of Balanced Nutrition and Yolanda Hill from participating in the program.

Balanced Nutrition submitted a notice to terminate their food program agreement on April 30. But NCDHHS says since a compliance review was scheduled two weeks before that, the agency is obligated to complete the review.

Neither Yolanda Hill or her attorney have responded to CBS 17’s requests for comment.
