(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause behind two inmates who were found unresponsive in their jail cell on Friday.

Around 11:15 a.m. deputies said they responded to a cell in the 300 pod of 8-East inside the Sacramento Main Jail for two unresponsive inmates. Both inmates were removed from the cell and provided with first aid and Narcan, a substance commonly used to reverse drug overdoses.

One of the inmates was revived and began to breathe on his own, according to the sheriff’s office. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was treated and returned to the Main Jail. His 40-year-old cellmate was pronounced dead at the jail. He had been in custody since June 22.

SCSO said the incident is under investigation and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
