Liverpool legend shares what 'success' looks like for Arne Slot at Reds

Former Liverpool star John Barnes is hoping for consistency from his old club as they adapt to life under new manager Arne Slot.

The Reds have made an impressive start to their preseason, securing wins against Real Betis and Arsenal during their tour of the United States.

Liverpool will wrap up their trip with a match against rivals Manchester United in Columbia, South Carolina.

That game will be the last of both clubs' preseason tours in the United States and it's also expected to draw the largest crowd for a non-American football event at Williams-Brice Stadium, which has a capacity of 77,559 and is the home of the South Carolina Gamecocks college football team.

Barnes: Finishing second in 2018/19 was more successful than winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League in 2001

However, Barnes believes that results alone aren't the true measure of success, either in pre-season or during the regular season.

"The aim is to be competitive in every game and if that happens, it means coming into April with a chance of winning something,” he said.

"It depends what you view success to be? Liverpool finished second, one point behind Manchester City (in 2018-19) with 97 points and lost once. They didn’t win a trophy but I would view that as a more successful season than one where they won the EFL Cup and Europa League and finished 30 points behind the champions.

"On this trip especially, because there are so many players missing, I am looking for a performance and cohesion and a sense the players are understand what Arne wants them to do. In that sense I have been impressed so far."
