Jets productive scrimmage marred by fighting and offensive miscues

The best part of New York Jets Green & White scrimmage is that the team appears to have escaped injury free on Saturday in Florham Park.

There certainly were exciting moments, including multiple pretty throws by future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but key miscues and some excessive post-play scrappiness put a damper on the day although head coach Robert Saleh didn't seem overly-concerned afterwards.

"The guys got a lot of good work in. We came out healthy. Some guys cramped, but it's a good day, a really, really good day," said Saleh.

While the offense had success moving the ball early against the Jets vaunted defense, the unit squandered two scoring opportunities.

"Offense had a couple of really good drives to start, stalled with a bad snap, then a fumble that ended a drive. Regrouped in the second half and took advantage of every scoring opportunity, to show resolve in that matter. There's a lot of different situations that we were able to hit naturally," said Saleh.

The first drive-killing miscue came from second-year center Joe Tippmann, who has had issues with snapping accurately . With the ball at the 8-yard line, the center launched the red zone snap way over Rodgers's head and the 40-year-old field general chased it down around the 27-yard line.

"We gotta continue working with it. He had a couple of good days, and, then today, with the environment a little bit heightened, it got away from him," said Saleh about Tippmann's recent woes.

Rodgers was dealing again on a subsequent drive that ended in opponent's territory when rookie running back Isaiah Davis fumbled on a 3rd-and-2 carry.

With the temperature reaching 90 degrees in Florham Park, tempers were also hot at times. The scrimmage ended with flare up as wide receiver Allen Lazard seemed to be upset with cornerback Brandin Echols. There was plenty of jawing before cooler heads prevailed.

"They got competitive. They get competitive. Those 20 pushups are a big deal," said Saleh laughing it off at his post-practice press conference.

At an earlier juncture, freshly-signed cornerback Tre Swilling appeared to take a swing at wide receiver Irv Charles. The two mixed it up at the end of a run play and Swilling was immediately pulled off the field by coaches.

The Jets will not practice on Sunday, August 4. They'll return to work on Monday and begin preparation for their preseason opener against the Washington Commanders .
