A couple has been brought before the court following the death of their infant from a head injury, believed to be consistent with 'shaking or impact'. Three-month-old Kaylani Kalanzi was rushed to Homerton Hospital in Hackney, East London , after her parents made a 999 call around 10.30pm on July 8.

The baby girl was then transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital due to skull-related injuries and tragically passed away on July 23, as reported by the Old Bailey.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she died from head injuries, which were said to be consistent with 'shaking or impact injuries'.

Herbert Kalanzi, 34, a Ugandan national, and Nazil Merthoca, 23, were initially charged with allowing a child to suffer significant harm on July 8. However, during a hearing on Wednesday, it was announced that they will now face charges for their daughter's murder.

The couple appeared via video-link from Bronzefield and Thameside jails for a preliminary hearing before Judge Mark Lucraft KC. The judge has set a timetable for the case, scheduling another hearing on November 1 and a provisional trial from June 16 next year.

Both defendants, residents of East Ham in East London, were remanded into custody,.
