A "one in a billion" spherical egg has been discovered in a woman's weekly shop.

The egg was found by a woman from Ayr, who discovered it in a carton of 15 that she had purchased from her local grocery store.

Curious about the unusual discovery, the woman got in touch with auction house Thomson Roddick Callan - who agreed to put the egg up for sale.

Similar round eggs have fetched up to £480 (over $500) at auction - with this one expected to fetch between £50-80 (over $100).

David Miller, auction manager at Thomson Roddick Callan , said: "In this week’s sale we have a rather unusual lot in the form of a round egg - not a perfectly spherical one but round nonetheless.

"The chance of this happening is one in a billion.

"The lady who purchased the egg was curious when she came across it and phoned Thomson Roddick Callan for advice and we put it into our next auction.

Let’s hope that it brings an EGGcellent price when it goes under the hammer!"

The egg will be available for bids on August 8.
