TINTON FALLS - A 21-year-old Berkeley man was responsible for multiple hit-and-run crashes on the Garden State Parkway on Wednesday, before attacking a construction worker after abandoning his vehicle, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Jonathan Ferro, of the Bayville section of Berkeley, was charged with three counts of assault by auto, driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, as well as numerous motor vehicle violations. He was released pending a future court date, said State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron, an agency spokesman.

State troopers responded to the incidents in the northbound lanes of the parkway at milepost 101.3 at 2:18 p.m. Wednesday, Lebron said.

Ferro, who was behind the wheel of a Dodge pickup truck, was involved in several car crashes before his own vehicle became disabled and he fled the scene on foot, according to a preliminary investigation.

Lebron said the suspect then physically assaulted a construction worker before the Neptune Police Department apprehended Ferro in the area of McNamara Way in Tinton Falls, which is along the municipal boundary between the borough and the township.

Ferro was transferred to the custody of State Police before he was processed and released. The incidents remain under investigation, Lebron said.
