Black River Falls residents urged to conserve energy to avoid overloading weakened system

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. (WKBT) -- Residents in Black River Falls should conserve energy over the next two days.

That's according to the city's municipal utilities general manager Casey Engebretson, who says the city is working on replacing a substation transformer that failed in June.

With extreme heat forecast for Monday and Tuesday, it's critical to conserve energy to avoid overloading their distribution system, which could cause a catastrophic failure, Engebretson said.

    Residents should consider:

    • Turning off all unnecessary lights and appliances
    • Avoid drying laundry/limit laundry to early morning or late evening hours
    • Set your thermostat to at least 76 degrees to lessen how often your A/C runs.

The city has found replacement equipment for the failed transformer and is in the process of changing it out, according to the city.
