Compared to previous years, even the relatively cool weather contributed to the overall relaxed and engaging ambience of the long running summer series.

After many years in the Windy City, most notably as the leader of the JazzTech Big Band, trumpeter Rob Parton wanted a change of scenery, which brought him to the University of North Texas, where he joined the faculty in 2019. And of course, that meant he now had the opportunity to work with lots of premium large-ensemble talent, as the college has been an incubator for big-band jazz for decades. Many of Parton's colleagues from UNT and other stalwarts of the Dallas-Fort Worth jazz scene are featured on Relentless, his initial offering from a group he calls Ensemble 9+.

Wandering Talk is the second part of a project from British bassist Orlando le Fleming which began with Romantic Funk: The Unfamiliar (Whirlwind, 2020). The album convincingly brings together the acoustic jazz tradition and the lush but muscular electric fusion which emerged in the 1980s. Not for nothing is one of le Fleming's heroes, paid tribute to on both albums, Wayne Shorter, a master of acoustic jazz and an architect of electric fusion.

Guitarist and bandleader Russell Malone died Aug. 23, while on tour in Japan, after battling end-stage kidney failure. He was 60. Bassist Ron Carter, who was on tour at the time with Malone and pianist Donald Vega in a group called The Golden Striker Trio, issued a statement saying: “Mr. Malone suffered a heart attack upon completion of our performance at Blue Note Tokyo.
