After a thrilling Travers weekend which saw Fierceness hold off a determined Torpedo Anna, we enter the final full week of this year’s Saratoga meet with the last chance for our Midlantic breds to capture another stakes win. Opening up this Wednesday at the Spa is a steeplechase contest in the Michael G. Walsh Novice Stakes run at two and three-eighth miles over the turf course. With a field of eight hurdlers, this race figures to be very contested, as these races can often be unpredictable due to the distance and nature of steeplechases. Still, at 6/1 on the morning line, Maryland bred gelding Lightning Rod has as good a chance as any to win here in his first stakes try.

Five turf stakes showcasing Virginia-bred, -sired and -certified horses attracted large fields for Virginia Champions Day at Colonial Downs on Saturday, Aug. 31. Offering $725,000 in total, the four stakes open to horses in all three categories – the Camptown, Bert Allen, Meadow Stable and Nellie Mae Cox – average 10.5 runners. The Jamestown is solely for Virginia-bred and -sired 2-year-olds. First post on Saturday is 1:30 p.m. ET and the added money events will go as races 5 – 9 on the 10-race program.

Colonial Downs: Big fields set for Virginia stakes

Virginia Champions Day at Colonial Downs is on Saturday, Aug. 31, and with runners entered in four of the five stakes, Mike Trombetta looks poised to make a run to repeat as meet leading trainer. In 2023, the conditioner tallied 18 wins, winning his first local title. Heading into the final two weeks of the 2024 meet, Trombetta is tied with Mike Stidham at 10 wins.
