( NewsNation ) — As an investigation continues into the school shooting that killed four people and nine more on Wednesday in Georgia, students at Apalachee High School expressed fear as they heard gunshots in the hallway outside of classrooms.

Officials have confirmed the four deaths and nine injuries and are expected to provide more details about the incident but students inside the building at the time of the shooting told NewsNation that they feared for their lives.

Cameron LeRoy, a 15-year-old student at the school, told NewsNation that he heard shots in the hallway shortly after 10:30 a.m. He said that his teacher then moved a whiteboard in front of the door.

At that moment, LeRoy told NewsNation he feared he would die.

“I was scared, but I’m good now,” LeRoy told NewsNation. “You never think that’s going to happen to you until it does. And then you’re just scared. You don’t know what to do.”

Police have confirmed that one suspect, Colt Gray, 14, is in custody. Investigators said Gray will be treated as an adult and will be charged with murder. They also said the deceased included two students and two teachers.

Winder is located about an hour northeast of Atlanta and is described as a quiet suburban area where the only gunfire that is heard for target practice, residents of the community told NewsNation on Wednesday.

Students who declined to appear on camera with NewsNation said they were shaken by the school shooting, which was reported just after 10:30 a.m. as a report of an active shooter.
