What’s the most you would pay for a Chick-fil-A meal? Whatever number you gave is probably still lower than what this first-time Chick-fil-A customer’s meal cost.
Fast-food prices have been increasing
Over the past ten years, the cost of fast-food items has increased by an average of 39% to 100%, significantly outpacing inflation, according to a study by Finance Buzz.
Among fast-food chains, McDonald's experienced the largest surge in prices, with its best-selling items seeing a price hike of double. Popeye's, Taco Bell, and Chipotle were the next in line, experiencing similar increases.
Chick-fil-A's menu prices also rose faster than the cost of living, with prices jumping by roughly 55% over ten years. This represents a 20% increase above the rate of inflation.
Given this, a quick meal from a fast-food joint might cost you anywhere from $10 to $20, depending on your location and the items you choose.
How much did this customer’s Chick-fil-A meal cost?
In a TikTok video that has surpassed 70,000 views, TikTuber Jay’Meya (@theonlyjaymeya) revealed that her first visit to Chick-fil-A left her surprised by the cost.
“Did I get got?” she asks, thinking maybe the cashier scammed her.
Jay’Meya describes how she ordered a spicy deluxe sandwich meal along with a special milkshake, and her bill amounted to $31.30.
“Does that sound right?” she asks, implying that it seems like a lot of money to hand over for a fast-food meal.
In a follow-up video, Jay’Meya gave more detail on what exactly she got. The Daily Dot pulled up prices (from a NYC location) to better understand the price breakdown.
A flavorful premium sandwich meal (including a side salad) costs $15.59, whereas a large order of fries is $4.15. Additionally, a milkshake costs $5.79.
Collectively, this amounts to $25.02, approximately $27.52 including tax. This is a bit less than what Jay’Meya paid, but it's still a significant difference. Ouch.
Although Jay’Meya liked the food, she appeared unsure about the expensive price. In response to a comment, she mentioned being overcharged for nuggets (which she didn't request) and the salad.
You know what else you can get for $30? Here’s a quick list:
A movie theater ticket and maybe a snack
A T-shirt
A cheapish blender
Three-month music streaming subscription
A book or two
A drugstore face wash and moisturizer
A karaoke microphone
Fancy socks
A nice water bottle
A Roku
An OK-ish kitchen knife
“Like I could’ve got hibachi for that price,” she said in a comment reply.
People in the comments section had a lot to say on the matter.
“31? I spend like 13,” the top comment read.
“Imagine if they had a website or app or sum where you could see the exact price of their items,” another person said sarcastically.
“He got youuu,” another said.
The Newsbreak creator did try to reach out to Jay’Meya for comment via Instagram and TikTok direct message and to Chick-fil-A via email.
