Houston Texans Could Cut Former 1,000-Yard Receiver

The Houston Texans have been a franchise with a focus on the next era. With CJ Stroud and Tank Dell rising and the addition of Stefon Diggs and Danielle Hunter among others, it is an exciting time for the team.

However, opening one chapter means closing the book on another. One NFL analyst believes this could be the case for Robert Woods.

Writing in an article for USA Today, analyst Christian D’Andrea explained.

“Bobby Trees is winding down an 11-year NFL career and is a valued veteran presence. He also averaged just 5.7 yards per target and 1.02 yards per route run — behind Jalen Tolbert and Nelson Agholor last season. Houston is flush with capable wideouts, making him an easy, cost-effective cut (or the Texans could opt to keep him around, given a comfortable amount of cap space heading into the 2024 season).”

In other words, the money isn’t the issue. Rather, the issue appears to be the number of roster spots available coupled with Woods’ production slip over the past few years.

Woods has failed to earn at least 600 yards over the past three seasons. Due to the influx of talent, the Texans have stuffed him into the fourth-string slot, per ESPN’s depth chart.

Potential Robert Woods exit from Houston might elongate WR’s career

With so many mouths to feed, it might do extra harm to Woods’ career if he tries to share with Diggs, Dell, Nico Collins, and Dalton Schultz.

Rather, if the Texans were to release him, he could find a larger role with the New England Patriots or the Pittsburgh Steelers. If his production were to reverse the downtrend, he could see a raise in 2025. However, if he sticks around, it could do him more harm than good over the long haul.

That said, if Woods is only interested in chasing the Super Bowl, Houston is as good of a place for him to join as any not named the Chiefs.

Woods also brings Super Bowl experience to the table, wherever he ends up. The wide receiver took part in a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams in February 2019, so he knows that spotlight.

Despite his advanced age at 32 years old, Woods can still bolster plenty of rosters in the NFL, even if he doesn’t quite fit on a loaded Texans roster anymore.

Will the Texans keep Woods around for depth, or will he find his fourth team in four seasons?
