As the Chicago Bears get ready for the start of the 2024 season, all eyes are on quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Bears selected Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and expectations are high for him going into the season. While Chicago might not be expected to make the playoffs this season, the franchise wants to see positive signs from Williams to prove that he is indeed going to be its franchise quarterback.

With the preseason underway for the Bears, Bleacher Report recently spoke about some of the goals Chicago should have in mind for Williams.

Here’s what they had to say.

Realistic Goal: Get a Little Experience and Get Out Healthy

“The only real goal for Williams these next few weeks will be to get those first few throws out of the way and stay healthy. The former USC star was named the starter shortly after being drafted, so he isn’t playing for a job. He’ll either gain some confidence by playing well or he’ll make a few mistakes from which he’ll learn.

Either way, Williams will be throwing to Keenan Allen, D.J. Moore and an impressive Bears receiving corps come Week 1. Between now and then, he just needs to get used to the rhythm, flow and nuances of NFL game days.”

Caleb Williams could achieve big things for the Bears franchise

Williams sat out in the Hall of Fame Game against the Texans, but we did see him make his debut against the Buffalo Bills. In a game in which the Bears routed the Bills, Williams got a good amount of playing time and the Bears scored field goals on both of his drives.

In the win, Williams totaled 95 passing yards on four-of-seven completions. As we saw at USC, Williams can stretch the field and make some explosive plays. The Bears’ franchise has been lacking that pretty much for its entire existence, which is why many believe Williams can be the best quarterback in franchise history sooner rather than later.

While staying healthy is a good goal, it will also be important for Williams to get used to throwing to his talented receivers in real game time. The NFL is a faster game than in college, and the more reps Williams gets in the preseason, the better equipped he will be for Week 1.

Next up for the Bears will be a matchup with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday afternoon.
