The 2024 season will probably be the biggest season in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. They are gearing up for a historic three-peat, an achievement that has never been done in the Super Bowl era of the NFL. Repeating as NFL champions is no easy task, let alone achieving three in a row.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs have their chance this year and if they are to achieve it, they will need a roster capable of doing so. By now, most of the roster is in place and as the training camp also comes to an end, Kansas City will have a better idea of who will be making the cut.

However, no team is perfect and every team has holes to fill even if they are back-to-back champions. A good way to plug the gaps in the roster is to have a look at the free agent market once again.

Even though most of the top players have already signed elsewhere, the Chiefs can still find a couple of them whose contributions will be helpful.

    Michael Thomas, WR

It is unlikely that the Chiefs will delve into the free agency market for a wide receiver. But, considering what they faced last year with the extraordinary number of dropped passes, adding a quality veteran such as Michael Thomas may be worth pursuing.

Thomas’ best years are well and truly behind him. He has struggled since 2020 with various injuries and has been out for prolonged periods. But, before the 2020 season, Thomas was a consistent 1,000-plus-yard receiver and a big threat for defenses.

The Chiefs have added Marquise Brown in free agency and Xavier Worthy from the draft this year but they could receive a setback if second-year wideout Rashee Rice gets suspended. If that happens the remaining receivers such as Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, and others lack consistency.

    Donovan Smith, OT

The left tackle position is very crucial as that player blocks the blind side of the quarterback. This year, Kansas City will be heading into the new season with two youngsters in Wayna Morris and Kingsley Suamataia. Morris was the third-round pick from the 2023 draft while Suamataia was drafted in the second round of this year’s draft.

With the three-peat on the line, the Chiefs should consider bringing back Donovan Smith after he helped them win the Super Bowl last year. Not only will Smith bring a ton of experience, but he is also familiar with the Chiefs’ offense and can be more than an able backup for the two youngsters.

What’s more, the Chiefs could sign Smith on a cheap one-year deal, as last year he had signed for just around $3 million.

    Jerick McKinnon, RB

When it comes to the running back room for Kansas City, they will be led once again by Isiah Pacheco who will be entering his third year in the league. Interestingly, Pacheco is already a two-time Super Bowl Champion who has played a big role in the Chiefs’ pass-first offense.

Behind Pacheco Kansas City has Clyde Edwards-Helaire who is a reliable backup. But after that, they are inexperienced with the number three option being Deneric Prince. Kansas City can look to bring back Jerick McKinnon who was part of the team for the past three years and also another member of the back-to-back Super Bowl winning teams.

Although McKinnon has not been used much in the run game by the Chiefs, he is one of the better blockers in the backfield. Also, McKinnon provides variety as a reliable pass catcher which has been quite useful and a good option for the Chiefs, especially in third-down situations.
