More cinnamon recalled after tests find elevated levels of lead
Federal health authorities are once again urging people to check their spice racks and cabinets for certain cinnamon products after testing found lead in multiple additional brands. Short-term exposure to very low levels of lead may not result in symptoms, but longer-term exposure to the metal can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, resulting in learning disorders and other developmental defects in children, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Chronic lead exposure is associated with kidney dysfunction, hypertension and neurocognitive effects in adults, the agency noted. Catskills man ticketed after killing rattlesnake with BB gun, skinning and eating it
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation police officers (ECOs) recently ticketed a Catskills man for killing a timber rattlesnake. ECOs Doig and Osborne received an anonymous tip on July 4 that a man in Hancock had intentionally killed a timber rattlesnake. Their investigation revealed that the man had also skinned and butchered the snake with the intention of eating it.
State official lists area bridges in 'poor' condition
The bridge that carries Interstate 87 over state Route 9 in the town of Lake George was listed in state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli's recent report on bridges that are in 'poor' condition and in need of repair or replacement. While construction work in underway on this I-87 bridge, dozens of others in Warren, Essex, Hamilton and Clinton counties await rehabilitation or reconstruction.
