Luke Whitlock , a Noblesville 18-year-old, finished second in the 800-meter freestyle in the U.S. Olympic Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium. He has made a meteoric rise in the event.
As a 15-year-old freshman at Noblesville High School, Whitlock finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle in the IHSAA state meet. Given that's the longest race in the high school program, he saw his future at greater distances.
He joined Fishers Area Swimming Tigers and, in the past year, has dropped his 800 time by almost 30 seconds.
Whitlock's performance grabbed the attention of Bobby Finke, the world's top-ranked 800 free swimmer and U.S. Trials champ.
“I saw Luke coming, trying to run me down a bit,” Finke said. “I was trying to get my composure and just kind of swim into the wall.”

Luke Whitlock breaks Michael Phelps' record
Luke Whitlock finished a 400-meter freestyle heat at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 3 minutes, 46.42 seconds. Michael Phelps had held the 17-18 age group record of 3:46.73 since 2003.
Whitlock finished fifth in the event final.
