Oklahoma Sooners lose elite defensive recruit to one of their biggest rivals

The Oklahoma Sooners have been killing it when it comes to the 2025 recruiting class. They just landed a four-star receiver from Florida in Cortez Mills, who chose the Sooners lover schools like LSU, Clemson, Nebraska, and Florida.

However, while it's been pretty great in terms of the guys they landed, they have now missed out on an elite prospect. That happens all the time at every school, so that's not the issue. The real issue is who he chose over Oklahoma.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound, Smith Orogbo chose the Texas Longhorns over Oklahoma. Orogbo also had Texas Tech and Kansas as two of his other finalists.

The reason he chose Texas over Oklahoma actually doesn't have as much to do with football as you would think.

"It’s Texas," Orogbo said when asked why he chose Texas.

Orogbo is a four-star from Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas. So, there was always the home state feeling there. But, there is a reason that Oklahoma was a school he was interested in.

If his decision came down to football reasons, it's obvious Oklahoma would have been the choice. The school north of Texas has seen much more success over the last 30 years and is historically a much better school when it comes to football. And, both are now in the SEC, so the conference doesn't matter much either.

The Sooners have made plenty of defensive signings for the 2025 class, but having an elite edge rusher like Orogbo would have been nice. Now, they move on and try to see what else they can bring into their already top-10 2025 class. They have already done what Texas just did - steal a recruit from a big-time school.
