As a scholar, he's charted the decline in religion. Now the church he pastors has closed its doors
They gathered one last time on Sunday — the handful of mostly elderly members of First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The members, joined by well-wishers, said the Lord’s Prayer, recited the Apostle’s Creed and heard a biblical passage typically used at funerals, “To everything there is a season ... a time to be born, and a time to die.” They sang classic hymns — “Amazing Grace,” “It Is Well With My Soul” and, poignantly, “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.” Afterward, members voted unanimously to close the church, a century and a half after it was created by hardscrabble farmers in this southern Illinois community of about 14,000 people. Many U.S. churches close their doors each year, typically with little attention. But this closure has a poignant twist.

Still a muse of inspiration, the Wham Education Building is the location of a new Welcome Center, has inspired puns through campus culture, and is named in the spirit of George D. Wham who was dean of faculty after a 32-year tenure at SIUC.

Column: Folks ‘married’ to their jobs need really good sports for spouses
“Don’t let him read a newspaper at the breakfast table!” was a little advice my mom gave Rita early in our marriage. When Rita shared that, I was puzzled. I didn’t recall ever reading anything at meals, or attempting to. Even as a boy, I was far more interested in the food. And I didn’t recall Dad, also a newspaperman, reading at the table. Perhaps Mom put her foot down on that before my memory. Or, she was letting Rita know “… you’ll have to put up with a lot being married to a newspaperman, but here’s one thing you can control.”
