Lawrence Township trustees await Butterbridge Road NW traffic count

    Lawrence Township trustees

    Monday meeting

KEY ACTION: Delayed voting on a request for funds to stripe Butterbridge Road NW until a traffic count can be done.

DISCUSSION: Road Department Superintendent Mark Sibila had asked trustees to hire a contractor to stripe and paint other road markings along 3,974 feet of Butterbridge Road for $7,400. State law requires that a road be striped if 6,000 or more vehicles travel it a day. Road striping is highly recommended if 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles use the road a day, said Sibila. A speed trailer which also counts vehicles traveling in both directions will be used to count the vehicles. Trustees will decide on the funding at their next meeting once they have the count.

Trustee Sean Roseman hopes to save money by not striping roads that are not required to be done. He noted that voters “want these things,” but they haven’t passed a levy. Voters will decide the fate of a five-year, 1.75-mill road levy on Nov. 5. If approved, the levy would raise $447,000 a year and cost a homeowner $61 a year for each $100,000 of the appraised value. This levy is replacing one that is no longer being collected.

In other action, trustees agreed to ask the Ohio Department of Transportation to approve a “no engine brake” sign on state Route 93 near Orrville Street NW in response to a resident’s complaint about loud noise from truck drivers using their compression engine brakes near his home. Trustees agreed to ask ODOT to approve locating a “no engine brake for a half mile” sign at the crest of the hill near the intersection. If ODOT gives its approval, the township must supply the sign and ODOT will install it.

UP NEXT: Will meet at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the township administration building. Trustees’ meetings may be viewed in real time by clicking on a link on the township’s website.
