Man throws explosive device on woman's car on LI

NORTH MERRICK, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Officials arrested a man over the weekend accused of throwing an explosive device onto a woman's car at her Long Island home in 2023.

According to detectives, at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, James Luca, 46, ignited an explosive device and threw it onto the hood of a woman's car, located in the driveway of her home on Sherman Avenue in North Merrick.

Luca then fled the scene while the device exploded, causing damage to the hood of the vehicle and the front windshield, officials said.

At 11:46 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, Luca was lawfully pulled over by police for unrelated vehicle and traffic law violations and after further investigation, it was determined he was responsible for the incident.

Luca was charged with criminal mischief, arson and criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned on Monday,
