UNION COUNTY, S.D. (KCAU) — A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred in North Sioux City Friday afternoon, leaving one dead and another injured.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, at about 1:47 p.m. on July 26, a man, 69, was driving in a 2020 Ford Escape north on I-29. At mile marker 2, within North Sioux City limits, he was reportedly slowed by traffic, which was due to a construction zone.

Another man, 57, was driving a 2013 Lexus RX 350 north on I-29 at highway speeds, when he reportedly hit the back of the Escape. A preliminary investigation indicates the Escape then went into the median and rolled over, while the Lexus went across the southbound lane and hit a fence in a ditch.

Both men were taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Escape died, while the driver of the Lexus suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Escape was wearing a seat belt, but the driver of the Lexus was not, officials say.

Names have not yet been provided for either victim.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
