The Northfield High School boys golf team finished its 2024 season by sending two golfers to the MSHSL Class AAA state tournament, which was held at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Minneapolis on June 11-12.

Sophomore Elias Ekern led the Raiders with a two round score of 156 (75-81), which put him in a tie for 40th place on the state tournament leaderboard. Freshman teammate Miles Poole placed 58th at the tournament with a two day score of 160 (81-79).

Torger Ohe of Edina was the state tournament medalist with a top of 135 (67-68). In the team standings, Benilde-St. Margaret won the AAA chamionship with a score of 596. Waconia (597) placed second and Maple Grove was third at 599. Of note, Section 1AAA champion Rochester Mayo placed seventh at 640.

“The meet was a great experience for Elias and Miles,” NHS golf coach Adam Danielson said. “As a sophomore and freshman this tournament was a great way to see how they compared to the best in the state.”

He added, “Elias opened with a solid 75. Unfortunately his putter let him down in round two. Miles struggled off the tee in round one and hit the ball very well in round two. He put himself in some great situations to get on a string of birdies but he couldn’t get the putts to drop. Both these two left Bunker (Hills) knowing with a summer of hard work they will be able to be one of the best golfers in the state in the very near future.”

Northfield completed an impressive season in 2024 with a second place finish at the Section 1AAA tournament. At the season end Big 9 tournament, Northfield placed third and the Raiders also placed second at the Big 9’s mid-season tournament earlier in the year. In dual meet competition, Northfield finished the year with a 27-6 record.

The Raiders are slated to return several of their top golfers in 2025, which includes state qualifiers Ekern and Poole along with top section tournament players Griffin Kennelly, Oliver Benjamin and Will Cashin.
