More than 30 beaches closed across Massachusetts day after Fourth of July
The chance of “pop-up” storms might not be the only reason you change your outdoor plans Friday, it might also be because your favorite beach is closed. More than 40 beaches in Massachusetts were closed on July 5 mostly because of excess bacteria in the water, according to the state’s public water quality dashboard.

Hanscom Field’s expansion proposal comes under further scrutiny for its environmental impact
The developers of the proposed hanger expansion at Hanscom Field are under renewed pressure to provide further data on the potential environmental impacts of their project. Last week, MA Secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, Rebecca L. Tepper, reviewed the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) and its regulations and determined that it “does not adequately and properly comply with MEPA and its implementing regulations.” While Tepper’s office oversees the MEPA process, it lacks the authority to reject the project outright. However, the report notes that Tepper’s office can provide meaningful opportunities for public review and engagement to assess the project’s potential environmental impacts.

BROCKTON — A 21-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting outside the Westgate Mall on the night of the Fourth of July, police said. Wellesley's Michael Li brings home U14 2024 New England Junior Tennis Championship
Wellesley's Michael Li made three a magic number at the 2024 New England Junior Tennis Championships. He won the boys 14 & under division title as the No. 3 seed Tuesday at Amherst College, beating No. 1 seed Joshua Chen of Lexington in the final. Li was a finalist in 2022 in the boys 12 and under tournament. His victory earned him an automatic spot in the Level 2 Northeast Team Cup at the end of July. Every age group champion will be honored at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Rhode Island, in July.
MassBay and Framingham High School Hold Second Automotive Technology Boot Camp to Strengthen the Auto Technician Pipeline
This is the second consecutive summer MassBay Community College and Framingham High School have held an automotive technology summer boot camp to help strengthen the pipeline of trained technicians. The boot camp, which has been funded through Framingham Public School, MassBay, and Youth Connections/MassHire grant, will provide 25 Framingham High rising junior and senior students the opportunity to engage in a three-week hands-on intensive workshop to learn more about the automotive industry. This program was created to provide students with career exploration in an in-demand STEM field.
