A physical rehabilitation hospital could be coming soon to Oak Creek on a site that has been planned for a medical facility for six years.

The Oak Creek Common Council, by a 4-0 vote, approved the rezoning of a parcel at 1402 W. Hampstead Lane from general business to institutional.

This plot of land could be utilized primarily for parking as part of a larger medical facility development directly to the south, on the northwest corner of 13th Street and Drexel Avenue, according to Matthew Sullivan, assistant city administrator/engineer for the City of Oak Creek.

Initially, Froedtert was set to construct what was touted as a neighborhood community hospital on that corner at 7869 S. 13th St.

While a hospital is still planned there, it’s no longer from Froedtert. That is all Oak Creek City Administrator Andrew Vickers could confirm due to a non-disclosure agreement, he said.

While the organization is unknown, it is known this will now be a physical rehabilitation hospital ― not for mental or behavioral rehabilitation, according to Vickers.

This is different than the initial plan from 2018 of 24/7 acute care services which could’ve included lab work, pharmacy, radiology and more. City documents indicated it would have included seven emergency room beds and eight in-patient beds.

The initial project was supposed to be a “next step investment” from Froedtert which operates a hospital in Drexel Town Square, according to 2018 comments from Ryan Marks, managing director at Ryan Companies out of Milwaukee which was involved in the Froedtert proposal.

The Journal Sentinel has reached out to this latest project's developer, Highgate, LLC, for more information but has not heard back.
