Kansas-born astronaut Joe Engle, first to pilot two space vehicles, dies at 91
An astronaut born and raised in Kansas has died. General Joe Engle was from Chapman, Kansas. He was the first astronaut to fly in space aboard two different winged vehicles. Engle was a U.S. Air Force pilot, NASA astronaut, test pilot in the X-15 research program, and a graduate of KU. The Kansas Cosmosphere has his XMC-2 spacesuit in its collection, displayed in the X-Plane gallery.

Engle was the commander of two Space Shuttle missions including STS-2 in 1981, the program's second orbital flight.
