On July 10 Michelle Sink, Area Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, told the JC Breakfast Optimist Club members about Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Michelle stated that her “area covers the counties of Riley, Pottawatomie, Geary and some identified cities outside of those counties. Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentor program in which caring adults work with youth who face adversity in their lives. Support, attending school events, spending time with and showing up for kids is important. Youth ages 5-18 are matched with an adult through a process.
Commission discusses dogs in park, selling land
On July 8, Clay County Commissioners discussed dogs running at large on county property and selling another piece of county property. County Attorney Joel Mason that it was brought to his attention this last weekend that dogs have been running at large in Clay County Park in Wakefield. Park rules state that all dogs are to be on leashes while in the park and a rental agreement is to be signed by each camper that states they will follow the rules of the Park.

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad is experiencing its best summer in the organization’s 31 year history. According to the organization, as of the conclusion of the long Independence Day weekend the railroad has hauled 6,233 passengers so far this year, compared to just over 3,000 a year ago at this time, and 1,500 for the same period in 2022. They have drawn passengers from five countries, 37 states, and 246 Kansas communities.

Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad is proving to be popular
The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad is experiencing its best summer in the organization’s 31 year history. At the conclusion of the long Independence Day weekend, the A&SV has hauled 6,233 passengers so far this year, compared to just over 3,000 a year ago at this time, and 1,500 for the same period in 2022. The A&SV has drawn passengers from five countries, 37 states, and 246 Kansas communities. The passenger totals reflect ridership on A&SV excursion, dinner, and charter trains. “We’ve been overwhelmed,” said A&SV President Ross Boelling, citing increased marketing efforts and an ambitious 2024 schedule that featured running more trains than in previous seasons as reasons for the uptick in passenger totals.

Cloud County Community College has received a $500,000 grant from the Sunderland Foundation. The award, received by CCCC’s Foundation, will be used for the college’s Technical Education and Innovation Center.
