Orange sheriff: Man with possible gang ties killed at 7-Eleven in armed confrontation with deputies

    By Silas Morgan, Orlando Sentinel,

A man with possible gang ties was fatally shot shortly before noon Friday in an armed confrontation with deputies at a 7-Eleven in Oak Ridge, Sheriff John Mina said during a press conference.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office gang unit was surveilling a home with multiple gang members suspected of crimes inside, Mina said. The suspect, armed with a Glock and an extended magazine, was seen leaving the home riding a scooter to 7-Eleven on West Oak Ridge Road where he was confronted by police.

The sheriff said the man initially turned away from a deputy and appeared to reach for the gun when he turned back toward him, despite the deputy telling him to stop multiple times. The suspect was shot and fell to the floor. Then there was a struggle for the gun and the suspect was shot again, he said.

Deputies provided first aid to the man but he died at the scene, Mina said. No details were released about the suspect other than he was around 19 years old and white. He said he didn’t have the suspect’s name and a second individual was with him but didn’t commit any crimes as far as he knew.

Mina said more than two shots were fired and it didn’t appear the suspect actually fired his weapon. No deputies were injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and will turn over findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own internal investigation after FDLE’s review is complete. The deputy that killed the suspect is on temporary paid administrative leave pending the FDLE review. His name has not been released.
