Science Museum Oklahoma is set to upgrade its planetarium, with closure planned after the final shows on April 21. The new Love’s Planetarium, scheduled to open in early fall, will incorporate advanced technology. The upgrade will include a hybrid system of optical and digital projectors, high-intensity LEDs, and fiber optic equipment, enabling high-resolution images of the Milky Way, including detailed stars, constellations, and celestial bodies.

Since 1958, the planetarium has been a central feature of Science Museum Oklahoma, offering educational programs and impressive displays. The upgrade signifies a new phase for the planetarium, aiming to extend the vision of the museum's founder, Admiral John Elson Kirkpatrick. The new technology will enhance the viewing experience, with seats individually adjusted for optimal viewing.

Sherry Marshall, John E. Kirkpatrick President/CEO, thanked the community for their support and enthusiasm for the upgrade. She also revealed a partnership with Love’s, aimed at promoting interest in space exploration and science through interactive educational opportunities.

During the upgrade, the museum will present special laser light shows every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night from May 9 to June 15. These shows will honor the planetarium's history and will feature laser art accompanied by music from various popular artists.

Marshall stated that the laser light shows offer visitors a chance to experience the planetarium in a different way before the new Love’s Planetarium and surrounding gallery open in the fall. For more information about the planetarium or Science Museum Oklahoma, visit www.smo.org.
